AWANA is a fun way for kids to learn about God through the Bible. Each age group has its own age-appropriate AWANA club. The name Awana is an acronym that stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed. It is taken from the Bible in II Timothy 2:15 which reads, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” (ESV)
As one of the fastest growing youth organizations, Awana provides a local church-sponsored program for boys and girls of all ages. Our hope is that all club members will develop faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, and then build on that foundation to become obedient servants of God.
Awana is held at the Sandstone Evangelical Free Church and is staffed with volunteer leaders from partner churches including Memorial Drive Bible Fellowship. Each leader is chosen for their commitment to Jesus Christ and their love for children. These men and women are concerned about each young person and spend many hours in preparation for this ministry.
Why Do Children Enjoy Awana? Awana clubs are loaded with exciting activities! Three segments (game time, handbook time and council time) provide start-to-finish adventure. And there is a purpose in each.
Game Time: Every Awana club meeting has a game time, which includes age appropriate team and individual competition. Dozens of organized games allow everyone to participate and teaches teamwork and sportsmanship.
Handbook Time: Using achievement-oriented learning segments (sections), Awana training emphasizes the importance of God’s word for sound living. Clubbers progress through handbooks, working individually and together with their leader.
Council Time: This is a general session for everyone. It is a time for group Bible lesson, singing, followed by awards and recognition for individual handbook progress.
For preschool children (the 2 years before kindergarten): Cubbies celebrates the spiritual potential of preschoolers by helping them develop respect for God, His Son and His Word. Preschoolers love Cubbies! Whether it’s the fun puppets, the exciting games or all their friends, they simply can hardly wait for their next Cubbies meeting. At Story Time each week, preschoolers learn so much about God! Lessons focus on the greatness of God's love, His Word, and His Son, Jesus Christ, the promised Savior. Non-competitive games build excitement and reinforce Story Time lesson themes.
For Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, Sparks ignites the curiosity of early elementary-age kids to learn about the people and events of the Bible, building a foundation of wisdom for knowing Christ. To many children in kindergarten to second grade, Sparks is the highlight of the week! They love their red vests, the exciting games and spending time with leaders and friends. Sparks is divided into three years, each with a unique rank: HangGlider, WingRunner and SkyStorme. Each year, kids in Sparks: • Explore the biographies of people of the Bible from a new portion of Scripture • Memorize Bible verses • Complete handbook activities.
For 3rd through 6th Grade The T&T (Truth & Training) curriculum teaches kids the truth of God's Word, trains them to follow Him and practice His grace. In this 4 year curriculum series, kids will explore the fundamental doctrines of Christianity including: • The character and nature of God • The structure and sequence of the Bible • The redemption narrative • Key practices for followers of Jesus By encouraging kids to engage in highly biblical and highly relational discipleship, T&T helps students to grow and develop as lifelong followers of Jesus Christ.
